Questions about machine memory, the methods used to test them, and the parts that remain unsolved.
Focus areas
Event-first memory hierarchies.
Whether representing experience as discrete events, rather than as continuous state, preserves structure that can be reused later.
Motif consolidation under corruption.
Whether recurring temporal patterns survive when the underlying observations are lossy: some events missed, others spurious.
The detector–representation interface.
Where the boundary should sit between detecting that something happened and deciding what it was. We keep them separate on purpose; whether that separation earns its cost is an open question.
Approach
We try to falsify our own results before we report them.
Every claim runs against null controls and ablations designed to make the effect disappear. If it survives, we report the regime where it holds and the regimes where it does not. Our current results include a condition where the effect reverses, and that condition is published alongside the rest.
We also keep claims narrower than the mechanism suggests. Our hierarchy behaves like error correction at the representation level, but we do not claim a coding-theoretic model, because we do not have one yet.
Output
ldgr-core is the provenance layer the research runs on, open source under Apache-2.0.
Our results are not yet published. When they are, they will appear here with the null controls and ablations alongside them, including the regime where the effect reverses.
Open problems
No coding-theoretic model.
The hierarchy behaves like error correction at the representation level. We cannot yet say why, and we do not claim a formal account.
The entropy boundary is empirical.
We know the effect reverses when the candidate envelope becomes too entropic. We cannot yet predict where that boundary sits for a detector we have not tested.
Synthetic to real.
Current results come from controlled corruption of generated signals. Whether they hold on real work sequences is untested.
